Summary of website Termanology and Acronyms
- Website address - Domain name (ie fatgalah.com)
- If you have a Business name registered, then it is better if you can get a domain name that matches your business name or close to it.
- You can have as many domain names as you want. For example I have fatgalah.com and fatgalah.com.au
- Hosting - Where the website will live.
- This is where you will upload/store your files that will run your website.
- If you are coming to have your website done by a professional, this is where they will upload the files for your website.
- Web hosting space - How much storage is set to store your website information. This is nornally in Mega Btyes (MB)
- This is just like your own computer, where there are folders where you store images and documents that make up your website.
- Website Traffic - This is the amount of (MB) and visitors your website uses over a set period of time.
- How this works is, every time someone opens / views your website they request information from the server which downloads the information to them and is calulated in mega bites.
- Domain Name Server (DNS) - How other servers find your website.
- File Tranfer Protocol (FTP) - The system/program to transfer file to the hosting server.
- Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) - The point that emails get sent out on.
- Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) - The point your receive email from.
- Content Management System (CMS) - These are programs written for the internet to assist people to put together and update they websites. Very little knowledge is need to operate these systems.
- Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) - Mainly used for financial transactions (ie Credit Cards).
- Search engine optimization (SEO) - Changes made to your website to help increase the amount of people visiting. For more information click here
- Website design - This is how you want your website layout / to look.
